Choosing Natural Fabrics for Outdoor Applique Projects

The secret to creating realistic outdoor applique? It is all about the fabric!

Ananda’s Divine Designs is known for their gorgeous appliscapes, applique landscapes that are stitched in pieces and assembled into a finished scenic project.

Part of the reason that these designs are so popular is that, not only are they so much fun to stitch, they are uniquely artistic. Part of that authentic look is in choosing the right applique fabrics.

Take Coastal Village Houses, for instance. Novelty fabrics (N) are wonderful choices for special effects like a sunset sky. Light and dark woodgrain look authentic on the dock and canoe and the tropical print in the dress and shirt of the couple on the balcony gives a beach feeling to the scene.

The beach houses use various tone-on-tone fabrics (T). Most are subtle marbles, which simulate sun-faded paint. Subtle tone-on-tone prints add texture to trees and stonework.

Striped accent fabrics (S) are wonderful for window treatments and umbrellas as well as emphasizing texture on siding.

Maybe that is why applique is one of my favorite embroidery methods. Gathering and choosing just the right fabrics is half of the fun!
