Windows Vista and HASP
Feb 09 Update - Solution now available for this problem – see the Comments
I am having major problems loading my 3D Embroidery software onto my new computer which has Vista operating system. It will not recognize the HASP, and the computer tech who installed my software spent hours trying to resolve the problem. Can you help? – Y. Gunn
Hi,
Unfortunately I have bad news. 3D is not compatible with Vista. You will need to divide your hard drive into two separate sections and run XP on one half for the 3D software. This is a relatively simple process and was one that I had to do when XP was first introduced in the days of the Version 5 software. VSM introduced the VIP software which was XP compatible. Everyone that wanted to upgrade their computers to XP had to move to what was then the new version of the software.
VSM have done the same thing this time with the 4D embroidery software which is Vista compatible. I guess once Microsoft release a new platform then the 4D will not be compatible and VSM will have new software available for us to purchase. Good for their cash flow!

Hello:)
Gosh, yep..I had some similar woes with some programs. I know Vista is releasing a service packs soon, which may further beef up the compatibility mode to allow programs to run in XP mode.
Its there now..if you r/click an icon, and go to Properties. In some instances, this helps , but in others it doesnt..Im guessing because some support drivers etc are not present in Vista.
Our software had minimal probs with Vista really..there is a Vista driver
http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.aspx
It may be that your software can work on Vista, if you can just get the driver. I can suggest trying the Vista installation of the hasp driver ,and once thats done, your software should pretty much start up if theres nothing else that is actually necessary within the software thats necessary to operate on Vista.

You can run 3D on Vista. I have done it. Go to http://www.sewmuch4retirement.com. Jan Henning has the steps you need to follow to get it to work.

I have been running 3D on Vista with no problem at all. The only snag I ran into was fixed by turning off the user account, which then allowed me to send designs directly to the machine. I also have friends who are running 3D without problem.

I have 4D organizer and can’t transfer files to the d-card. I have a PC running Vista (purchased 1 month ago). The USB driver won’t install properly. Is that an update or way to get it working? It works in safe mode.

I did not know who else to contact, but I beg to differ with the answer on the blog about 3D Emb from Husqvarna not working with Vista. All a person has to do is go to HV site and there is a dnload for the Vista and a dnload for the dongle – I have done this with no problems at all. 3D will work just fine with 3D Emb. Diane Nichols

If you go to Pfaffusa.com and enter 3D a screen will come up with a number of topics about 3D software listed. One is Help and Updates. Select this one. At the top of the box that comes up it will ask you to enter the number of the FAQ you would like to look at. Enter G016. That will bring up a page about 3D and Vista. In that topic there will be a topic which tells how to update the dongle to get it to work with Vista.

Hello Everyone:
My question is a two parter.
1) Do I need a new serial cable for my 2144? My old computer died (Windows 98) and now I have Windows Vista. There isn’t a portal in the back of my tower which fits the adapter.
2) I have the 3D Emboridery software, which I purchased with my Pfaff 2144 in 2002. Do I need to upgrade to the 4D Emboridery system?
When I purchased my 2144, my dealer retired. I have since moved to a new state. I found a new dealer to service my 2144, but when I called to inquire about the Vista problem I had, the owner told me to call customer service at Pfaff since I didn’t purchase my machine from them. Pfaff doesn’t have a number to call to inquire about how to get my machine to communicate with my computer and I don’t think I’ve been getting updates from Pfaff even though I registered with them online in 2002.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I battled with Vista on my laptop and my 3D Embroidery program. I couldn’t activate the “dongle”. So I gave up and tried to load it onto my desktop computer which runs XP. I ran into the same difficulty. Now I have a lot of money wrapped up in a software program and a Reader/Writer that I can’t use. Can anyone help. Oh yes, I downloaded every patch or anything else that Viking had. I turned off user accounts, my virus protection, and anything else that was running. HELP!

When the 4D software was first released it was stated that it would be necessary if you wanted to run on Vista.
My blog comments were written before VSM finally released a 3D Vista driver for the dongel at
http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.aspx
The install has to be done in a specific sequence of steps. If you have been trying to install the 3D software unsuccessfully you must remove all traces of 3D from the computer first including any folders that are floating about that may have been missed in the uninstall. Install the dongel driver first and then install 3D following all the prompts as to when to attach the dongel. Check with the install instructions that came with your software.
Depending on how your computer is set up you may need to place the dongle into the exact USB port that you used for the install in order to get the computer to “find ” the dongel when you want to use the 3D Software.
I have also heard that some Pfaff cables have problems with Vista.
The VIP dongel does not have a Vista driver available (as at Aug 08) and is extremely unlikely to do so in the future.
I hope this is helpful.

Pamela/Faye -
I have heard that that there are some problems with the cables connecting the card readers for both Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking and the computer not working with Vista even though the 3D software is now ok with the new drivers. The direct cable connection to the Pfaff 2140/44/70 is ok it is just the smart card readers that are having problems. I hope that they are working on it. It took quite a while for the 3D Vista driver to appear, meanwhile the dealers were pushing the line that there would not be one and that 4D was the only option.
All I can sugggest is that you try the latest hasp driver at :
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/global/8588_4197.htm
Purchasing 4D or upgrading your sewing machine to a USB transfer machine would solve your problems. This is probably what the dealers are hoping for. Public pressure finally won out with the 3D software so hopefully the owners of the smart card machines will also be successful.
Kind Regards

I had to upgrade my computer as well and now run Vista, I am running the (archaic apparently) VIP Customizing embroidery. I managed to get my dongle working by downloading a driver from the sentinel website (they bought out Rainbow). But now my computer will not recognize my d-card reader writer. I am in the unique situation of being stationed in Italy and finding a dealer stateside willing and able to work with me is frustrating (I have a Viking Designer 2), it was suggested I use the “local” dealer, but more than likely they don’t speak English, and my Italian is poor at best and doesn’t include any sort of sewing/computer terms! What I want to know is if I do upgrade to the 4D system, will my d-card reader writer work??? I don’t want to invest nearly $400 in software that I may not be able to use!

Dear Nancy
There may be problems even with the 4D software with the reader writer units and Vista. But it will be worked on and fixed if they have not already done so.
The VIP software was designed to run on Windows 95/98 and was superseded long ago by Windows XP Operating system. In computer terms it is extinct now.
4D Embroidery Extra is well worth the money and will be the only way that you can use your reader writer as the D2 uses a D-card system unique to Husqvarna Viking.
Your other alternative is to change your sewing machine to one that does not require a reader writer unit, but this could work out more expensive in the long run.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531 machine running Vista Home Premium (SP1). My wife purchased the 4D Organizer and d-Card Reader/Writer back in December. I have been able to install the SW and drivers (they show up in installed programs list), but when I connect the d-card R/W the following error message appears:
“Device Driver software was not successfully installed. VSM Reader/Writer and Embroidery Machine Failed. USB Driver Type A”. Viking SW Support folks say device drivers were successfully installed because they show up in Installed Programs list. They did mention that they thought it might be due to the Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller. They told me to get my technician to install a “non-standard” controller. (this machine is a home computer so I am the technician…)
The dealer my wife purchased the software & d-card from was able to connect/write to the reader/writer on their machine (not Vista). They have also been talking with Viking Support. They are telling the dealer that problem has to be due to my machine setup/configuration.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it the Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller (currently running version 6.0.6001.18000)? I even tried running the SmartUpdate on the 4D Organizer (updated to version 8.2.1.0 and corresponding driver) with same result. Once again the new driver and 4D Organizer show up in installed programs list. Any help would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.
Thanks,
John

4D VSM driver problems seem to be resolved by the updated drivers from husqvanna’s web site. I ran into the same exact problem with my wife’s branda new Toshiba laptop. Pulled down the update and install it…ran fine… here is the URL

john from ct,
As I mentioned, I already ran the SmartUpdate and received the latest version of 4D and its drivers. The dealer talked with Viking Support and they basically said that the VSM drivers and the Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller “don’t play well together”. They suggested I try and plug the d-card RW into a USB Hub Port, but it didn’t help.
Thanks,

After a year trying to get my 3D embroidery system to work with XP I finally decided to search for a used Win 98 computer and run it as a standalone without internet connection just for my embroidery system. I now have a working keyboard, mouse, crt and computer. I then installed my customizing, buzz tools, etc and connected my reader/writer box. The box has the light on and the computer recognizes it until I try to write a pattern to it. This seems to shutdown the reader writer box (no lights) and an error msg appears on the CRT (no dongle attached). I contacted my husqvarna store and they say I need a patch. BUT, What patch do I need. I emailed software@husqvarnaviking.com and they got back to me with questions. I answered their questions but now, their server is replying with ‘server is full’. Here are my particulars: Aystem 5 customizing version 5.1, The dongle is black #3, All cords are original to the reader/writer box, The reader/writer is white with a light and medium purple label. Here is hoping you can help a very frustrated Husqvarna user.

Is your reader writer unit the old version 5 model with the black dongel that attaches via a serial port at the back? This is not compatible with the 3D software, only the version 5. I gather that you are using version 5 from your letter. If it is recognised then the cords are working. You have remembered to move the little switch on the side from read to send. This used to be the most common problem in the past with this model.

I bought my wife a new laptop, with Vista on it. I went through the exact same steps as I had done several years before to install 3D on a Vista laptop (where 3D worked) and nothing I could do would make 3D run on the new laptop – or any other Vista latop in the house. I have tralled this site and google for any other ideas…. but no matter what I did – 3D and Vista was behaving like an 11 year old on Crack!
In the end I put in another disk drive that I had lying about- installed XP, installed 3D – and it all worked. I then spent several hours updating the system (XP SP3) and 3D 7.2 – to get a Hasp Not found (-100). A quick update windows later – the Hasp driver was updated – and it now all works.
As an IT professional, I got the feeling that someone upstairs does not like me.
Can anyone recommend any other emboidery s/w (like Brother) that might be cheaper than the 4D option and might be a little more intuative?
Cheers

John,
Were you ever able to get the d card reader writer installed. I also am running Windows Vista Home and upgraded the sw and driver to 8.21. I am still getting the error “vsm reader writer and embroidery machine failed usb driver type a”. I am hoping you were able to find a resolution that you could pass on to me.
I could not find the original usb cord that came with my reader writer so I am using a printer usb cord instead – could that cause the issue?
Thanks,
Heather

Well I have an old viking rose and reader/writer kit that I discovered wouldn’t work w/Vista. SO – I solved that problem by installing Win ME on an older laptop that I have.
NOW I’m faced with a cable problem. First off, I can’t find the cable to the reader/writer box – and even if I had it it wouldn’t not fit on my computer without a USP adapter.
So when I shop for a cable and/or adapter what should I look for ?

I am running Windows XP and cannot get my 3Dcard reader/writer to connect. The error message says it can’t find it. I took it to my dealer, works just fine on her PC. So something isn’t right on my computer. I had this happen before, and found a soluttion, but didn’t keep it (dumb, I know!). It was a program glitch. I had to remove everything when I re-located my computer. All the USB’s are in the same place they were before but now it won’t work. Very frustrated that my dealer is no help. See More Info.

I have been looking at these high end machines and have noticed that none of the companies are forth coming with technical information, yet charge such exorbitant prices for their machines. I would say it is about time they publish the compatible issue up front, because machines are meant to last for years, if not generations, and should not be tied to whether Microsoft decides to update operating systems. I have a laptop with Vista 64 bit operating system and not one company states whether it is compatible. Janome published a Vista 64 bit patch for their new MC11K, but the blogs totally discredit the operation of this machine. Is any one from the manufacturers reading the blogs to see their customer base is experiencing such frustrations and obsolescence on a hobby that is suppose to be enjoyable. Perhaps it explains why one major company is emerging from bankruptcy. Their own website does not even display properly under Firefox so how can we expect them to keep up with the technology. For all of you that went before me, thanks for the info. I will keep my money and spend it more wisely until the sewing industry gets their act together and lowers the prices for the head aches they are forcing on their customer base.

I have the Viking Rose machine with the 3D software. I last used it about 2 years ago. My new computer has Vista and will not work with the software. I tried using an old computer with XP (the computer I used for embroidery before purchasing this one) and I would not work. I made numerous attemps several months ago to install the new driver without success. The dealer says I must upgrade the software to the tune of $600, but since I only embroider occasionally for gifts, I don’t want to spend that kind of money. Any suggestions? Please help!

I am another customer who has purchased a platinum plus embroidery machine with the vip customizing software and d card reader writer. I managed to get the software to work with vista and windows7, but when it comes to sending a pattern to the d-card it says that there is no driver. I have been researching this problem for now over a year. It is frustrating to have $5000 worth of equipment just sitting there and not being able to use it and all I hear is that I have to put more money into purchasing the 4D software just to see if my d card will then work. My laptop running windows xp died and I had to get a new one, but all are running vista, I heard that windows 7 professionl can run in an xp mode and that is not even working after spending another $300. Is there any other way to fix this without spending more?

It’s not enough with the vista upgrade for the dongel,to make that work you need the upgraded version of 3d embroidery that is 7,25.
If pc does not see the reader/writer you could need the drivers,I can help you if you want.
