Janome MB4

Hi, I presently have a Janome 350E embroidery machine and I am thinking of purchasing a Janome MB4 embroidery machine. Have you had any input regarding the MB4 from anyone who owns one? – Winnie C

Hi Winnie,

I own the MB 4. I love the ability of 4 threads and yet have 4 additional ready to go is awesome. It clips the threads between OBJECTS as well as the color changes. Thread breaks, the machine goes back to where it broke.

The hoops are larger and do not require splitting or multiple hooping.

I have had no problems with the machine as well.

I have a MB4 LOVE it. so easy and fun, SO much better than by Benina 1530 which did some designs. I would suggest getting the Digitizer at the same time.

Do threads on the MB4 typically stay tight or must one constantly check as you do embroidery or monogramming? I ask because my wife just got a MB4 and it took a bit of time to learn how to tighten the threads just right.

Oh yes a follow up question. What would be a good digitizer to get (I know almost nothing about embroidery or monogramming) and how much should we expect to pay?

The Janome Digitizer Pro -MB is a good digitizing program. It has a cataloging portion of the program, you can auto digitize and also manually digitize. Most of the MB hoops are already built into the program. You can though, create your own hoop if need be. Many options for fill stitches.

I would suggest going to your dealer and asking them to show you the program.

As far as the thread tension, I have not had much of a problem with tensions being off with my machine. What type of thread are you using?

Hi, I have just bought a janome mb-4, and I have a big problem!
I can not use the hoop 240mmx200mm, because the program that I used to use, don´t accept to create a new custom hoop. It´s Buzz Edit.
Wich program do you use to convert the programs to mb-4?
Untill now, I coud´t use that hoop, because the size. Thanks a lot!

Hi

If you do not have the Digitizer Pro MB, I would suggest Embird. I have used this program with JEF designs that I have purchased. I open them in Embird and select one of the MB4 hoops from the hoop menu. Also with Embird you are able to save to the JEF+ format. Most of the color information is not lost.

The other option is to save the design in DST for the machine. But then the colors are lost at times.

Hi Alana,

The software by Janome you will want is Janome Digitizer PRO MB. The dealer where you purchased the machine at should carry it.

Any program that allows you to create hoops in the program and also save to DST will work.

Hi,
We have an MB4 and have found that the thread doesn’t take up 50% of the time after an auto thread cut between objects. The machine says ‘re-thread and re-start’. Does any one know what might be wrong?

Hi, I just got my MB-4 and didn’t get the digitizer program, ordered it today. I am used to transfering everything between my computer and machine. Don’t want to wait for the program. I am trying to use a usb stick with no luck. Any sugestions? Thanks so much. Pam

Hi I’m having problems opening files from a cd onto my computer and transferring them to the flashdrive to use in the machine. What program do I need to use to convert to dst or jef and transfer them to the flashdrive?

I have two MB4 machines. At first they worked great (bought them both new) but in the last 6 months or so they spend more time in the repair shop than with me. I’m very frustrated, the thread “wads” up in the needle plate which in turn ruins the item I’m embroidering because I have to cut it to get it out.
I have spoke to my repair/sales person and he said there are a lot of issues with this and he is fixing them often. Honestly I am considering selling them because of the amount of problems I’ve had. Ithink they still have a lot of bugs to work out.

I agree with you Jackie. I also purchased a new MB4 and at first, it was great. But now the tension constantly needs adjusting. My bobbin thread doesn’t even show up and my top thread has a LOT of loops. It’s more fo a hassle than a pleasure. You’re right, they do have a lot of bugs to work out. I’ve been using a sewing machine for 39 years and I have never had these problems. Good Luck

I’ve been having the same problem. It worked great at first, but once the problem started it was done hill. From bunching the thread, loose thread, and even jumping off track of the design being stitched out. One big headache!!!

I just bought a MB-4. I have never owned a Janome before and found the manual sadly lacking as to detailed instruction. Setup went fine, the sales people helped me with loading patterns, but when I tried sewing things out, nothing was in line, I couldn’t tell where I was on the pattern, and when I converted from pes to jef the patterns sewed out screwy(?). Even the built-in lettering sewed out wrong (out of line), is there something wrong with the machine or me? Are there tutorials on this machine other than the cd that came with it? I use Embird to convert. Thanks

Also have an MB-4 that will not pick up the threads after auto cutting. The problem seems to be linked to the kink in the thread made by the cutter and the fraying. If you trim the thread with scissors after the thread cutter has attacked it, the take up improves….Anybody found any real solutions to the issue?

What program are you converting your designs from PES to JEF?

How are you hooping your fabric? Make sure you are inserting your hoop correctly with the machine.

I just bought a Janome mb4. I love that it will do the 4 thread changes, but is there a way to make it stop between each color. I do a lot of applique designs and was told by my dealer that it would–but she can’t find out how.

Thank you for your quick response, I took my machine back to the shop, apparently the belts required tightening. It sews out fine now, however I am having trouble combine patterns, i.e., a picture with lettering.

Find it verey difficult to convert copied images into >jef for machine embroidery. Also the janome MB v3 software manual is hard to follow through. Help Pete 15/10/09

I have the MB-4 since August, 2008. But I’ve been having the same problem (jumping off track of the design) but only when I set it in 800spm…
I don’t know if there is a problem with the software, the machine…. I’m going crazzy!!!! I have a lot of work to do and is taking HOURS!!!
I’ve already took the machine to service, and they say that there is nothing wrong… please help!!!

Are you familiar with Embird software? Using Embird and the plug-in Embird Studio (Digitizing Tools) you can import an image to use as a template for digitizing. We have much more information about Embird and Embird Studio on our site.

Reference MB4 running at 800spm. I own 2 12 needle machines, both stitch at 1000 spm, or they would do if I set them to do that. I run them at 600 spm for fill stitches and 400 spm for satin stitches. Just because the machine has a high speed setting doesn’t mean you should run it at that speed. You are putting extra wear and tear on the pantograph arm, the needle arms, take up springs.
Would you drive your car at full speed or one to suit the road, your machines are no different.
Most tension problems, stitching problems are due to running the machines at too high a speed, slow them down and preserve their useful life, cuts down on servicing, items needing replacement.

I have owned a MB-4 for a little over a year now and LOVE it!!! I wouldn’t use anything else for embroidery!!

I have found it is very pickey in regards to thread and most thread problems/issues come if I do not use a high quality thread–even if the thread is labeled “embroidery thread” (like from JoAnn Fabrics).

I have the Digitizer MB program and it is awesome as well! I have tried Embird, but find the Digitizer program more user friendly. (maybe I’m just more used to it and it is difficult to switch.)

The MB4 can be stopped at each colour using the assign needle function (the bottom option on the right of the main screen). Change the needle to red and it will stop after that colour. Conversely, you can prevent a colour from stopping by changing it from red to blue.

I too have had major problems with my MB4. Needle 1 jammed within the warantee period. After it was fixed, needle 2 was slow to lift. Now, 12 months down the track, needle 2 is so slow in lifting that the carriage head moves before it’s completely lifted and the needle breaks, ripping the fabric. I’ve tried everything – from oiling to realigning the needle. Because of it’s weight, it’s not easy to take in to be repaired so I’m sewing on 3 needles at the moment and it’s a real pain to have to go in and reassign all the needles when loading a design to avoid needle 2.

I’d appreciate anyone’s opinion of the Quick Snap Hooping system. I received one when purchasing my MB4 and I’m having a lot of trouble with my designs when I use it. Actually I’m not too surprised because I have the Magna Hoop for another embroidery machine and don ‘t use it anyone for the same reason. Wonder if I’m doing something wrong or if everyone has the same issues. Thanks so much.

To format a memory stick to the machine Janome/MB4, make sure the machine is turned OFF … insert the memory stick into the machine and turn the machine on … you only need to do this ONCE, before using the memory stick on the machine for the first time.

I own an MB4 but am having problems with the 3rd needle, embroiders ok through 1 and 2 needles but when it get t0 3, the machine grinds away on the interior for some seconds and then I get this message PLEASE POWER DOWN AND START AGAIN. Have done this a number of times no joy problem stays, not sure if 4th needle position is ok as I cant get there. Has anyone else had this problem. I live in Tasmania Aust, only 1 qualified service agent here and he is 2hrs drive by car.

New to Embroidery. Just got Janome 350e. What software (embroidery file converter) do you ladies recommend. Heard about Embird, Amazing Design, Buzz Tools Plus – its all Greek to me, Using my USB stick, I just want my JEF designs to travel back and forth between my computer and my 350e – Nothing fancy.

hi i can’t afford the janome digitizer mb i just bought a janome MC200E embroidery machine. is anyone selling the software used or if that is not permitted please tell me one thing: i want to take photos of my mother and turn them into a stitch/applique i’m told as long as it is saved in a .JEF format i can use it. can you please suggest an easy to use software i can use with my MC200E it takes a flash stick so i would have to grab the file from my flash stick. I already have a freeware called PULSE AMBASSADOR. i’m not sure how to use it.

Hi this is sabra again i don’t want anyone to feel as though i’m starting trouble you can call me at 917-213-0118 i wasn’t aware when i purchased the machine for $499.00 that i would have to purchase software that costs more than the refurbished machine. MC200E embroidery machine. i was better off just using a octi hoop system that uses a regular machine and a zig zag or straight stitch. one other thing i love the designs with the different textured or thread textures is there a software that does that for less than $1,400.00 i can’t believe i fell for it.

Hello Marlene,

Thanks for your query. You really don’t need to use your embroidery software at all to transfer your design files to a USB memory stick. Just locate your unzipped and saved design files on your computer, select the files you wish to transfer, right click and a menu will pop up- now choose Send To and select the relevant drive.

I recently purchased the mb-4 second hand and am having a problem I can’t seem to resolve. The needles do not align up properly with the hole in the plate and therefore break constantly. I have tried unscrewing and shifting the plate, but the needles still seem to be just a fraction off. Any ideas on how to correctly align the needles, possibly from on top, so that they will fit properly through the hole and not break?

I have had my MB-4 for about 4 months now and love it, seems like everyday I decide to try and do something new with it. Never realized how much MORE I could with with my MB-4 than my Futura Ce-200!

My question is about hoops, I see that the machine is compatible with six industry standard “Tajima” hoops. What does this mean when it comes to the maximum design size? Can I use a Tajima hoop that allows for a larger stitching area than the maximum 9.4″ x 7.9″ using the large MB-4 hoop?

I have a MB4 and have had problems when the carrage moves to needle 3 and 4, the machine was sent back to jenome as my dealer could not fix it. I was told they had to replace the chip. 3 months later i have the problem back again and can not use the machine. ”Needle bar is out of position. Press OK to move needle bar to switching position.” I press OK and it it grinds in the interior for about 10 seconds. The levers on the exterior do not move. I then get ”Please power down and restart again.” If I do that, we just go through the same sequence with the same result.

I just purchased a Janome MB-4 machine. I have a Brother Innovis 1500D which uses pes designs.
I have pe design I believe 7.0 or 8.0. Am I going to be able to use all the designs I have that are pes format?

Anyone have a hat hoop? If so, the instructions on step 10 states; Pull the lower back edge of the cap toward the back of the hoop insert “base plate”, matching the center back seam of the hat with the V-groove. What do they mean by “base plate”? Anyone with the answer. Thank you,

hi i owned janome mc 9500 and i got #01 error(rasie the pressure foot and needile bar then power off and on again). If i do like that also i get same warning then i took to the technician the he changed the board after 1month inth middle stitching the hand stuck and moving only in 4directions xandy then i restarted then again it showing #01 warning wat to do please help me-…..

Hi. I purchased an MB4 and am anxiously awaiting it’s arrival. I am trying to find out if it will do 6×10 designs without splitting? Also, do I need to order an additional hoop to do the 6×10 or will the hoops coming with the machine suffice?

I have a MB4 and have had problems when starting the machine. It is asking to make sure hands are clear to so that the carriage can move to the set position. It then makes a grinding noise does not move and asks to be powered down. Similar to the problem raised by Jill in October. Has anyone had a successful resolution to this issue. My repairer has looked at it twice so far.

The problem of the needles breaking because they hit the face plate is very easy to fix. Look in the manual under needle changing and read about lowering the needle into the hole before tightning. That will solve your problem.
I love my MB 4, I always use nets over the thread to prevent breakage.

Hi, my MB4 also had the problem of grinding and powering down. My ealer/repairer did a home visit and repaired it for me in one visit. He was unsure of what to do so was on the phone to Janome who gave him advice. The problem was an electrical one. Not an electronic problem. I was told that it could be because something, like some threads, had ecome caught behind the arm as this causes the same sort of problem. I love my machine and have had no other problems. I use BuzzExplore to convert my designs to JEF. I have never had problems and would NOT recomend DST. There is a screen on the MB4 to format your memory stick, otherwise do as someone suggested, turnoff the machine, place the ‘stick in, turn on and it will format automatically for you. You need to then open the EMB file, on the ‘stick, and place your designs in that file on your computer first. Hope this helps.

Hi Yvonne from Tasmania. I too live in Tas. The dealer who repaired my machine came from Devonport and he does home visits. He was very willing and helpful even though I did not buy my machine through him. Your problem sounded similar to mine.

Doe anyone have any experience with snap hoops, magna hoops or similar for the MB4?

I am having the same problem with my mb4 grinding down.my repair man comes out at least every 2 weeks fixes it but it happens over and over.is it possible for limbed to give me her repair man,s e mail or phone no so my repair man/dealer can contact him ? Any help would be appreciated.

After a PC crash that lost all applications, I am trying to re-install Customizer 11000 for my 350e. The screen options don’t appear to be the same as I originally could see. Any ideas?

We are having a lot of problems with our MB-4 locking. It seems to start with tension issues (looping) and we noticed that our bobbin is not working properly. We stitched an entire design (which looked horrible) and realized after that it did it without the use of the bobbin. Finally by chance we got the bobbin to catch, and it stitched beautifully. The next item went right back to looping and no use of the bobbin. It then sucked in the top thread and we had a huge wad stuck in the casing. There are quite a few threads still stuck behind the casing, which has happened before and we have been able to get most of them out. There has to be some reason why this keeps happening! Now our machine is locked, which I am assuming it is because of all I the debris that we can’t get to. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be with our machine? I assume all of our issues are related in some way. I am so frustrated. The machine is only 7 months old, and as much as I love it when it is working properly it has been nothing but a headache for over a month now. I find myself nervous to use it because I feel like I can’t trust it! Any help is greatly appreciated.

In response to Cindy, asking about my repairman’s name or contact. That is I assume she ment me. The dealer was Ross Stewart from Stewarts Sewing Machine Centre in Devonport Tasmaia. As I mentioned Ross was on the phone direct to Janome who gave him advice on how to repair my machine.

I still love my machine. It is so easy to use.

Hi Kaz, You cam use Tajama hoops (or something like that). They are already programed into the machine. I have looked and find that they do not appear to be any bigger though. You can use Magna hoops but they are no bigger. Brother PR machines are very similar and have bigger hoops but they both machines cost heaps more too. Janome Digitizer Pro is the program Janome sells, but Embird is much, much cheaper and does everything any of the other programs do and it suits all brands of machines. You can buy it on this site.

I just got the MB4. It starts embroidering fine, then in the middle of a letter it will jump to a different position and start sewing. What in the work is going on? My janome dealer here is very unhelpful. They keep my machine forever if I take it in. Can anyone give me a suggestion?

I have had my MB-4 for 2 years now and love it, but recently the number 1 needle thread shreds. I have tried everything I can think of to correct this problem, but have not been able to solve it. I have changed thread, needle, bobbin, bobbin case, oiled machine and bobbin, re-threaded machine, etc. I continue to have issues. It does not seem to shred with the other needles. I appreciate any help anyone may have! Thanks.

My Janome MB 4 will be sewing a pattern then suddenly jumps or creeps up out of the pattern and starts sewing in a different spot.

Hi, Many of you have commented that their machine jumps out of alighnment. Now mine has started doing this. No-one has come back with an answer or solution. Any ideas what is wrong and how do we overcome this, please? I am starting to pull my hair out with frustration and I too no longer trust the machine. I cannot bear to walk away from the machine when it is going now as I don’t trust it to keep alignment. Help please.

My Janome mB4 keeps looping on top and you cant see the bobbin thread at all!!! Also, it doesnt catch half the time either….it looks lik it is monogramming and when you take it off and look at the item it hasnt caught on bottom and all you have to do is pull one thread and the whole thing unravels!!!! HELP

I have an MB-4…bought it in Jan 07. It takes a lot of maintenance in order for it to embroider without broken threads, skipped stitches, thread loops, etc. But as my first embroidery machine I love it when it is working properly!

I bought a hat hoop which should be M4 on my screen but it is grayed out. Is there a reason for this?

Ok, my machine has been jumping out of line too.. i see SO many comments about this, no one has an answer? A friend of mine has the same machine, now hers is ALSO doing this. It will be stitching, then randomly jump way off an keep stitching so my design is all messed up!!! ive called soo many repair shops and NONE can help me. APPARENTLY this is a common problem.. ??? what did you do about it?

i had a problem with needle 3 and 4 on my mb4 . the machine would grind tell you to power down and restart but the problem was still there. when i sent the machine back to the dealer who then had to send it back to jenome to replace the chip,since i have had the machine back i will only run it on 600 speed and the problem so far has not returned. the dealer did suggest slowing it down as i always run the machine on 700 or 800 and was told that may have been the reason for the problem

I had the problem with my designs jumping off line. I contacted Janome Australia and they denied any knowledge of this problem. They were very willing to help. Their answer was that I need to transfer my designs to the machine via the Digitiser Pro/MB4 progam as this uses the janome language inbedded into the machine. This is the Janome program. I received it as a bonus when I purchased my machine but I never used it. I find this program difficult to understnad but I am trying to learn it. I don’t know if this is the answer or not.

I am having a difficult timeusing the
Snap hoops for the MB-4 particular with alignment of desing…has anyone esle had thiis issue and what was the fix??

Missed thread pickup: May be tension too tight on the bobbin- incrementally loosen the tension on both top and bottom.

Looping: 1. New needle. 2. Try different rotational position of the needle before tightening. 3. Thread may not be best for an MB4 (I use only Robison-Anton). 4. Clean-clean-clean. 5. Adjust top thread tensions.

Jumping: I had this problem. My repairman fixed it and said it was “dried grease” on the carriage transfer bar. No further problems of that nature.

Grinding stopping during needle transfer: The poor quality metal used to form the arm that guides the needle into the up/down notch was bent slightly. The needle tab would catch on the tip of the guide and stop the movement. Four trips to same repairman did not fix it permanently. I fixed it myself.

Needle arm out of position: Re-start the machine while disassembled (needle heads removed). The arm moves to proper position. Then re-assemble. Do not in the future hand move the needles or turn the hand wheel.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what stops the rcs unit from spinning on the bar it hooks to on the machine. I bought a used machine that was just the machine and have to order all the parts that were missing. I have the 2 screw knobs that attach the unit but it just spins on the bar. The photos and videos do not show it up close enough for me to figure out what I need.

My mb4 doesn’t cut the thread completely and causes the thread catcher to bend. I have replaced the thread cutter and it hasn’t fixed the problem. Any suggestions?

I have an MB4, which I love, I have always been thrilled with it but now I have a huge problem, my computer died and the new one has that dreadful Windows 8 and now my computer won’t talk to the MB4 so I can’t get the designs over to the sewing machine. Can anyone give me any suggestions….it is definitely the program as it works with my lap-top (which has runs Windows 7, without any problems). I would appreciate any suggestions.

I am trying to find out how to program my mb4 to stop between thread changes. When doing applique it would be helpful to know how to do this.

Paula. I asked Janome about windows 8 and digitiserJr. They told me that there is an update available so that digitiserJr will work with Windows 8. Give them a phone call or send them an email. I have always found the customer service team at Janome very helpful.
