Open Designs in Embird by Default

Hello Carolyn,When I double click on any design (no matter which format) I would like the design to open in Embird. I do not wish the design to open in it’s own program (i.e.:- .hus to Husqvarna, or .pes to the Brother program.

My Embird program did do this previously, but since upgrading to V.8.4, I now find that the design will open in in the program it was saved for rather than in Embird.

I know that there is a way to change this, but I cannot seem to find the instructions in your tutorial. I know it must be there, but I cannot find out where!! Can you help?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Clemmy

If you wish to open your embroidery files in Embird when double clicking on them in Explorer or through My Computer then this is what you need to do.

Open Embird Manager
Go to Options on the Menu Bar
Select Associate Extensions

In the screen that appears move down to the file format that you wish to open in Embird and double click on it. An “Open …files with “screen will appear. Change the “Look in” drop down to the folder where Embird is keep typically Program Files/Embird32. Select the Embird Application file (exe) and click Open. Embird32 will now be showing in that file format line as the program that this file will now open with. Click OK.

If you wish your icons to also show as small images of the design then go to Options/Iconizer settings and make sure that Select All is clicked for both the top two sets of file names. Click OK.

Now you should be all set and when you double click on a file name in My Computer or Explorer, Embird will open for you.

I hope that helps.

Kind regards

Printing Multiple Templates

How do I print multiple templates on one page with Embird 2006? I thought that was possible. - Cindy in MI

Hi Cindy

Yes, this is possible. If you have my Step by Step tutorial for Embird I have covered this command in it. However if you don’t have the tutorial to refer to then you can print multiple templates in Embird Manager through the Right Panel, Print/Print Floating Template.

I hope that helps. Best of luck

How does Embird calculate Fill Paths?

Hi, I have previously tried to ask a question on the blog but assume I did not do something correctly as I have not seen it posted.I have several of Carolyn’s tutorials and am wondering if you can direct me to where I would find a good explanation of how Embird calculates the path of fills. I am trying to do a fill for a chubby little body. It has arms and legs outstretched and I want to direct the start and end points so that it does as close to a one pass fill as possible.

I have played around with it but am not having any luck. It starts the fill on one side and then moves around doing other parts until it works its way back to complete the fill. I would really like a good explanation of where to put the start and end points to achieve a one pass fill in Embird Studio. Some one on one of the embroidery groups thought that Carolyn has such a lesson so I am hoping to get the info here.Very much appreciate any help you can give me. - Thanks, Karmen Ray, Vancouver, WA Hi Karmen,

Carolyn covers the topic of using Fills and Outlines in her tutorial for Embird Studio. She has recently released her new tutorial for Studio V5, and we do have a special offer on this if you are an owner of her tutorial for the previous version of Embird Studio V4.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further queries.

Merging One Design With Another

I recently purchased Embird and Studio. I also purchased Carolyn’s Studio Tutorial. I’ve been through the tutorial and cannot find help for what I want to do. I created an alphabet design and I want to copy the design for each letter. Can I duplicate a design and/or parts of a design into a new design? For example, I created a block letter and within the block, I’ve created a design that will be in all the alphabets. But, it’s a lot of work, and I just want to copy the design into each letter, so that it will be consistant throughout the alphabet. Can I do this? I hope I’ve explained clearly what I am wanting to do. Thanks so much for your help.

Have a blessed day,
Elizabeth Robinson

Hi Elizabeth

Yes, sure you can do this. You just need to select the design or the objects within this design from the Object orders screen on the right and copy and paste it into the new file. If the object needs re-sizing a little you can also select it and go to Transform on the Menu Bar and select Transformations. Click on the Re-size TAB and enter the new measurements.

You can also save this selected pattern object as a separate file for use at any time in any object. Just select the object and go to Design/Save as and save it as a new file name. Studio will save just that selected object for you. Then you can use it in any future designs by using the Design/Merge command when in Studio.

Also if you have been working on a series of objects with identical settings then you can also save those settings as you work. You need to select the first object that you have created in the Objects Order screen and then go to Parameters. In the Parameters screen choose your preferred settings (density, pattern etc) and then click on the Parameters button at the top of the screen. Place a check mark beside Hold Parameters for new objects. Then each time you create a further object with the same tool then Embird will apply your preferred settings to it.

Another alternative is Styles as well but there is a section on this also in my Studio tutorial.

If you have any further questions fell free to email me.

Kind regards

Embird 2008 Iconizer

I have a question about the Embird 2008. I purchased Embird 2006 and the Iconizer. When I purchase Embird 2008 will the Iconizer portion of the program I purchased with Embird 2006 need to be re-purchased or will that still continue to work?

I don’t want to have to keep re-buying the software but love the Iconizer.

Thanks
Angie N.

Viking Disappoints

The following was posted in December 2007.  It was hidden in an obscure location on the blog, so has been moved here due to a routine clean up. - Secrets Blog Administrator.

I am thoroughly disgusted with Viking Husqvarnia. I purchased the original Designer I soon after it was introduced. I then purchased the customizing program and have upgraded all programs and the Designer I when updates were available. Additionally, I purchased the Autodigitizing Program for approximately $1,500 and have updated that every time an update was available. I have since upgraded to the Designer SE and have updated each available update. However, I can no longer receive updates on the Autodigitizing, and Viking no longer supports that program. The Autodigitizing web site doesn’t even exist any more. If I want to have new features, or re-install Autodigitizing at any time, I will have to purchase the new 4-D and pay out another $1,500 plus. I have probably put over $10,00 in my machine and software and believe anyone who has purchased all these programs should get some relief when being forced to purchase new software.

I will not spend another dime on Husqvarna products.

Image Comes Out Too Small

Carolyn is asked:

Thanks for looking at my design. I appreciate the pointers you gave me. I hope to improve upon this design. I re-did the design using a larger hoop size and it truly made a difference.  I found when I did select the 8×8 Janome hoop my design was still much smaller than the hoop. I selected the hoop size prior to importing my JPG file. How do I set the size so that when I digitize my final result will be close to the actual size I need?

Carolyn replies:

If you have set the correct hoop size and the design is still too small then I think your image might be the problem. There is probably too much “white” area around the outside of it.
You will need to crop it closer - either in Studio or a graphics program. Studio opens the image at the size it was saved at but if it has extra area around the outside graphic then that is also imported. So you will need to crop it. Save it again and then try it again in Studio.

Add Your Own Underlay

Carolyn is asked:

Is it possible to add underlay to existing designs in Embird Studio?

Carolyn replies:

Yes - it is possible to add your own underlay to an existing design in Studio. Open the design in Editor and go to Edit/Edit in Studio. Then when it opens in Studio take the Create Fill Tool, deselect Make Cover Stitches from the Parameters screen on the right hand side, and then create the shape of your existing design on the Design Page. Finish the object and then drag the new object (underlay) to the first position in the Object Order screen. Then use the Compile and Place in Editor command. You’ll now have new underlay in your design.
Of course you can also change other Parameters when in Studio such as the angle of underlay and the density of underlay but those are all a matter of personal choice.

How to Monogram

Carolyn is asked:

Will I be able to monogram (three-initial or two - different sizes) using Embird?  If so, how?  Will the basic include alphabets or will my monograms have to be from alphabets in my library?

Carolyn replies:

Yes, you will be able to do monogramming with Embird. Using their Alphabet styles and the Envelope feature in the Text Layout page you will be able to do as you wish. However Embird Studio (digitizing) will also allow you to easily create your own distinctive monograms. Embird is the best value for money around.
