Upper Thread Catching

I am new to embroidery, and have had a consistent problem with the upper thread catching around the bobbin. This then in turn, pops out the bobbin, ruins the project, and has become (as you will be able to see) very frustrating for me. I am to the point where I do not want to do anything for “real” on good product, because I have had to pitch several shirts and baby items because it tends to make a hole in the garment. This is after testing the product. I have tried to complete the same pattern 5 times now for this to happen at any given time - wasting my fabrics.

When I finally free the hoop, and the bobbin, I have 4-7 rounds of upper thread around the bobbin. What causes this, and how can I avoid it?

Thank you,
Dana

Dear Dana,

Welcome to the wonderful world of embroidery! I know you will have lots of fun as soon as you get your machine sorted out.

I have had the same aggravating problem from time to time, and each time it was caused by an improperly threaded machine. Check the manual that came with your machine and be sure that you have the thread following the correct path exactly as it is supposed to be. Also make sure the needle has been inserted correctly and the thread is not wrapped around the needle after it has been threaded. Check the bobbin case to be sure the bobbin is in correctly, so that the bobbin thread spins off in the right direction according to your manual. If you have done all of these things and still have this problem, it’s time to take your machine into the shop and see what’s wrong. This is not a problem with designs, fabrics, stabilizing or hooping…it definitely is either in the mechanical works of the machine or caused by incorrect threading!

Good luck!

Viking SE, Alphabets & Embird

Carolyn,

I recently upgraded to the Viking SE and it came with 3D software. When I had the old Customizing 5 software I was able to use the Alphabets and do lettering in it and save it and then was able to stitch it out in Embird as I do not have any of the Alphabets or Font Engine. Is it possible to do the same in 3D and sew them out in Embird? So far I haven’t been able to do that an my friend said it is not possible.

Thanks,
Myrna

Hi Myrna,

Unfortunately I am not familiar with the Viking 3D software but to my mind you would not have to use Embird at all if you were just using the Viking lettering and then sending the lettering to your machine. The only reason you would use Embird would be if you created lettering in the Viking 3D software and then wanted to add a design to the lettering using Embird. Then you would save your lettering in 3D as a Hus or VIP file and then ?merge? that file into Embird Editor. Merge your design and the lettering and then save once again as a VIP or Hus file. You should then be able to open the design again in Viking 3D and send it to your machine. There is an option in Embird to also save to a USB stick for your machine. In Manager right mouse click on your design in the right panel and choose Input/Output operations and then select the Husqvarna Viking ESB Embroidery stick. I haven?t tested this myself as I don?t have the latest Designer SE ? I have the previous model which takes the floppy discs.

I hope that helps. Kind regards,

Carolyn

Too Many Stitches Problem

Hi Carolyn

I have PE 5 software. Recently I downloaded a free design which has 75000 stitches. I opened it by clicking on the design and I clicked on save as (wanting to save design in a folder where I collected all designs I wanted to write to card for next project). Warning box appeared stating “Exide data limit too many stitches.Saved data cannot be sent to the card writter module. Do you want to save data anyway?” I want to know what I can do in order to write this design to card and use it. I have a Brother 1200 machine but I always use my card on which I write designs. I never tried to connect machine to computer although the manufacturer stated it comes with that option.

Roxsy

Hi Roxsy

You will need to make sure that the design you downloaded fits within the 5×7 (130×180) hoop. It may have been created for a larger hoop than the 5×7 so you will need to open your PE Design software and then open Layout and Editing. Set the hoop size to 5×7 first. Then open the design by going to File/Import/From file and selecting the file you downloaded. Check if the design fits within the 5×7 hoop. If it does fit the hoop size then you can write the design to your card from Layout and Editing. Just go to File/Write to Card/Current Design. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you still get an error message then the design is too large and may need split to fit the overlap hoop for your machine or alternatively your card may need upgraded ? however I did think that it was only the PE Design cards that need upgrading ? but I could be wrong about that.

It is very easy to send designs straight to your machine using the USB connection. All you need to do is use the plug that was included with your machine and then plug the USB end into your computer and the other end into your machine. Turn your computer on and then turn on your embroidery machine. My Computer will open on your computer screen and your machine will appear in the My Computer screen as another hard drive. You can then use the usual Windows features such as Copy and Paste or drag and drop your Pes embroidery designs into this hard drive which is your machine. Press the Computer icon on your machine and you?ll see the embroidery designs that you copied. It?s really quick once you know how ? VBG!!

I hope that helps. Kind regards

3D Software & Vista

I am trying to load my copy of 3D Embroidery Professional on my laptop which has VISTA on it. I have downloaded the drivers and everything looks ok, but when I try to open 3D Embroidery I get “H005 HASP Not Found (-10)”. I logged off both systems like the Viking website said to do, but still get the same error. I have rebooted my computer. Please help!

Hi,

The 3D software is not compatible with vista on most computers. Some have got it to work after installing the 3D Vista update from the help file #H013 and then reinstalling 3D. You could try right clicking on the 3D icon and set the compatibility of 3D to XP. You can divide the HD and run XP on one side with 3D. Most people are reformatting the computer and returning to XP or getting a second computer to run 3D.

Monograms in PCD or Font Engine

Is it possible to create a 3-letter satin stitch monogram for my 9mm PCD (Pfaff) program, so that I can stitch it out without having to hoop it? Should I do it with Font Engine or try to digitize it myself?Beverly

 Hi Beverly

Yes, you could create the three letter monogram in your PCD program and if you are really comfortable with that program then it will be no problem for you. However, if it was me, then I would opt for Font Engine or one of the Embird texts every time as I am extremely comfortable with those programs and IMHO it would be a lot quicker than I could make anything in the PCD program. So it?s really up to you to decide which would be easier for you. The results from the Embird programs are excellent though.

As to not hooping a monogrammed design then I would not advise you not to hoop. Monograms are usually fairly stitch intensive and need the support and security of a hoop as a hoop will hold everything in position better if hooped correctly.

I hope that helps.

Removing Embroidery Stitches

I wanted a letter C in large form. Did two samples and then put the shirt in and it started in the center with a small C. I removed the shirt and proceeded to remove the small C ..took a couple of hours, but I did it. There has to be an easier way to remove embroidery stitches. That is my question. How do you remove embroidery stitches???

Yes, it is a pain in the neck to remove embroidery stitches, especially if you are trying not to dislodge the fabric in the hoop while doing so. There is a really handy little tool that I found at the Nancy’s Notions web site www.nancysnotions.com which you might like to try. It’s called Peggy’s Stitch Eraser and looks like an electric hair clipper, but it sure isn’t! This neat tool quickly and easily removes even dense stitches without damaging the fabric. It’s a little pricey, but in my opinion, well worth the investment, especially if you are as accident prone as I am!

For those who don’t make many mistakes :-) here’s some hints for removing unwanted stitches:

Clip the bobbin thread stitches, not the top thread. Use a really sharp seam ripper or a tiny pair of scissors with curved, very sharp blades. (Sharpness is needed so that you will not have to push hard or tug up resulting in accidentally stretching or dislodging the fabric in the hoop, but take care not to cut the fabric.)

Work one layer at a time. Clip the first layer of bobbin stitches and pull away the top thread, then cut the next layer (the underlay bobbin stitches) and pull away the top underlay stitches. After cutting the bobbin stitches you can lay the hoop on a hard, flat surface and drag your fingernail gently over the top threads to loosen, making them easier to remove.

Hope this helps for future mistakes!

Embird & Designer SE

I purchased Carolyn’s tutorials and downloaded the trial version of Embird. Prior to downloading and purchasing the tutorials I reviewed Embird’s functions; specifically looking for assurance that I can move designs directly to my Designer SE with this software. It appeared to me that function is in the Editor section, but I can’t find it. I want to purchase the software, but I need that function. Note that I do not have any Viking software installed because the 3D organizer and 4D organizer isn’t compatible with Vista.

Jennie

Hi Jennie

Yes you can send designs to the Designer SE but it is best done in Manager. Open your design in Manager and then go to the Right Panel Menu on the Menu Bar and then down to Input/Output operations. Choose Husqvarna Viking Embroidery stick and follow the prompts. That should work for you. Embird is awesome and you don?t need any other software. Isn’t that great?? The only issue with Embird and Vista is that currently Iconizer may not work with it but the Embird folk are working on that as fast as they can. They may have fixed it since I have been away but I haven?t checked yet as I haven?t had time.

Kind regards
