This is a different kind of reverse appliqué, one where the overlaid fabric is not cut away. This technique is Overlay The Appliqué™. It uses lightweight, see through fabrics which are overlaid on top of the appliquéd pieces and then detailed stitches are done on top of the overlaid fabric. Cotton batiste works the best, but you can use other sheer see through fabrics, too.
