These instructions are for Windows XP.
They should also be applicable to Vista or Windows 7, but if you would like any additional help with unzipping your files, please email us and we will be happy to help you.
If you are purchasing designs from Secrets of Embroidery, you can download them to your computer when you have completed the purchase. In some cases, designs may be sent to you by email attachment, or mailed on a disk.
Graphics files such as pictures and embroidery designs are large and because of this are usually transferred in zipped files. When a file is zipped it is smaller, therefore it can be sent to you more quickly. You will need to unzip the file and extract your designs before you can use them.
The procedure is that you first download the ZIP file from the Internet, locate it on your computer, open it, extract the files and save them to wherever you keep your embroidery designs. The ZIP file you originally downloaded can be deleted. Then when you are ready, open the unzipped design into your embroidery program, send it to your machine and stitch it out.
See our Downloading Guide for step by step directions showing you how to download your zipped file.
Locate your downloaded zipped file and double click on it. The following screen will appear which shows the contents of the zip file. Select the files that you wish to extract from the zip file. In this example we are using a free design file, and we only require the PES format and the PDF file which contains the instructions. Click Extract.

Now choose your destination. In this example we are using a folder called My Embroidery Designs.

When your files have been extracted, which only takes a moment, you can navigate to the the folder you extracted them to, and you will see the embroidery file and PDF file inside.

We have a great tutorial available on CD called Connect the Dots which covers the topic of unzipping files in more detail and has many other easy to follow lessons on computer basics. Click here for more details.
