Zipped Files
When you download a file to your computer, it will likely be in one of two formats:
1. an EXE file (eg: secretsof.exe) or
2. a ZIP file (eg: secretsof.zip)
Most files are zipped which means compressed. Zipping a program for sending it across the net changes the format and makes it considerably smaller than it was before.
First the file has to be unzipped (decompressed) using a Windows program such as WinZip. Double-clicking on a zipped file makes WinZip automatically appear if it is there on your computer.
If you are not sure whether you do have WinZip on your computer check by doing the following steps:
1. Click the Start button
2. Point to Programs
3. If you have WinZip installed on your computer, you will see it there.
4. If it is not there you can download it from the following address:
http://www.winzip.com/ddchome.htm
If your downloaded file is a ZIP file, here’s how to unzip it:
1. Start up Windows Explorer
2. Go to the directory you saved the file to (My Downloaded Files)
3. Find the file and double-click on it
4. WinZip will start.
5. A list of all the files that have been unzipped will be displayed
6. If the downloaded file is a program you will find one of the files has an exe file extension. Double click this file to start the program.
7. If the downloaded file is not a program, maybe it is a picture for example; WinZip will prompt you to extract it to a destination of your choice.
When the file has been successfully unzipped and extracted or setup, make sure it is in it’s destination directory and delete everything in your My Downloaded Files directory, so it is empty and ready for the next time. (see previous chapter on File Attachments for more tips.)
