Directional Stitches Tutorial
by Carolyn Duncan

Learn about using Directional Stitches and programming Stitch Sequences with this easy to follow mini-tutorial from Carolyn Duncan. This tutorial is a generic version of Carolyn's Omni Motion Magic tutorials. It includes information from these tutorials that is relevant to all machines.
Directional Stitches sew in 4 different directions - forwards, backwards, left and right. They are often much wider than standard 6mm or 9mm stitches and often need the aid of the "balancing" option to achieve good results. This tutorial is designed to help you specifically with these bigger stitches but it does apply to all decorative stitching as many of the standard stitches look much better when they are "balanced".
The tutorial has 13 pages and covers:
- Techniques for stitching out wide decorative stitches
- How to programme a hand-look quilt stitch and candlewick stitch for any machine with a memory function
- How to use the BALANCE function for decorative stitches
This tutorial would be suitable for Janome, Brother, Elna, Singer and Bernina owners. Owners of Husqvarna Viking Quilt Designer and Designer 11 machines could use this Directional Stitches tutorial or the Omni Motion Magic for Designer 1 tutorial. A maxi stitch tutorial that is specific for the Pfaff machines will be available before the end of the year.
The tutorial includes the six freebie designs shown below. Three are for the endless hoop and three are all over fabric designs made using the omnimotion stitches. If you do not have the software to create your own designs, you can use these to practice with.
