More from Cindy on Rags to Riches
These two quilts have been on the drawing board for a long time, over three years to be exact. So now you’re probably wondering about the name and why two.
I am a romantic at heart...I remember sitting at my grandma’s house...thinking about the dream home I would have when I grew up. Opulence and elegance would be at every turn. Beautiful drapes with swags at the windows with plum and gold being the predominate colors. Of course I would have a little girl that I would sew for and dress in the most perfectly matched garments...and of course, she would be the most perfect child. I would have a handsome prince charming who would dote on my every word. Hello...let me tell you how it really is...I grew up, got married to a dairy farmer, we moved on to the family farm, had four sons and lived in a farmhouse that was built in 1916. The dairy was about a hundred yards out our back door...across a dirt/mud driveway. Are you getting the picture? The only part of my dreams that came true was the prince charming part...he is all that and more. But for the rest of my dream...way over rated.
Well, the romantic spirit and a love for beautiful things never left me even in the midst of the cow p__p and the flies and the hog p__p and the mud brought in by four little boys...and of course prince charming helped in that respect. Cooking for groups of hungry men and helping on the farm and screaming for the four millionth time… “Close the door when you leave...were you born in a barn?” I can definitely tell you that isn’t true but sometimes I began to wonder if I would ever get all the flies out of my house and have a clean floor that would last more than five minutes. ButI digress...back to the quilts. I just love elegant fabrics...silks and shiny satins and vibrant colors are right up my alley.
Some of you may remember the Antique Linens Quilt I did in 2003...it was gorgeous and I sewed it in silk satin and morie bengaline fabric. When it came time to make another one...my color sense ran to my other favorite color way...black and vibrant hand dyed fabric. I love doing appliqué whether it is on the embroider machine or the old fashioned method of driving the machine yourself. So it seemed that my new quilt would be in the opposite spectrum from the last one...Black and with beautiful appliqué embroidery designs. I still chose to use silk satin and for my second fabric, I chose silk dupioni. VERY elegant. That’s the Riches quilt.
Now...can you imagine, with all those boys, just how many pair of jeans our little family has gone through? Let’s just say that we kept Levis in business for the last 35 years or so. :o) Well, I can’t throw them away now can I? So, I decided to make a quilt out of them...not your traditional type of quilt that people lay down for the dog to sleep on but an elegant, double sided quilt that anyone would be glad to own. Both quilts use the included embroideries and the layouts are the same but boy are they totally different. I added a few other twists using peach colored linen, purple linen and some beautiful toile. This is of course, the Rags quilt. It’s not really, but there is such a stark difference, I needed a name that would show how different they are from each other.
