Projects Made in the Hoop - Ready Steady Bag
by Anne Jennens from The Purple Hat.

The panels for the bag are made in the hoop. They are then assembled using your sewing machine and/or by hand.

Supplies:

  • Fabric for bag ( I used approx 12 inch x 50 inch wide or 30 cm x 127 cm wide)
  • Fabric for lining
  • Coordinating fabric for large and small flaps
  • Thin batting or felt
  • Water soluble Vilene
  • Embroidery threads
  • Fabric glue
  • Cotton webbing for straps and handle (1 inch wide x 60 inches long or 2.5 cm wide x 1.5 m long)
  • 2 x ladder locks (make sure they are big enough for the webbing to slide through comfortably)
  • 1x toggle
  • 2 x clothes pegs
  • Pins
  • Approx 39 inches (1 m) cord for drawstring
  • 2 x buttons (approx ¾ inch or 2 cm in diameter)

Step 1: Embroider pattern pieces

Embroider all pattern pieces for the Ready Steady Go Bag using water soluble Vilene. Trim away excess stabilizer and clean edges with a damp cloth.

Step 2: Attach small pocket flap

Pin the small pocket flap approx ½ inch above the side pocket. Make sure the pocket flap is straight and the flap and pocket edges line up.

Attach with zigzag stitch. Recommended setting: W=3.5 L = 1.0

The side pocket is now complete. Snip through the buttonhole and sew your button in place.

Step 3: Attach handle and straps to back panel

Pictured right is the "hardware" required to make your bag:  All of these items can be obtained at a haberdashery shop.

  1. Cotton webbing
  2. Two ladder locks
  3. One toggle
  4. Two buttons
  5. Cord for your drawstring

Cut your webbing pieces as follows:

Handle - 7 inches (18 cm)
Top straps - 2 pieces x 11 inches (28 cm)
Bottom straps - 2 pieces x 14 inches (35 cm)

Pin handle strap to the top center of the back panel, so that the edges of the webbing are 1¼ inches away from each side edge of the back panel

To make top strap, fold over  ½ inch hem and fold over again to make double fold. You can glue  the folded edges in place with fabric glue. Hold in place with clothes peg until dry. I find this makes the hem easy to sew down.

Now thread through the ladder lock  as shown above.

Stitch in place with your sewing machine using a straight stitch. On the above photo, I have drawn  (yellow lines) the way in which
I stitched the hem down. Make the  other top strap in the same way.

Pin finished top straps to either side on the handle on the back panel.

Hem one end of each bottom strap and pin to the bottom of the back panel in line with the position of the top straps.

Now using straight stitch, stitch the handle and straps in place. This prevents the straps shifting out of place when the flap panel is sewn on in the next step.

You are now ready to attach the  large flap. Line up the large flap  and back panel pattern pieces and pin your straps as shown above. The handle strap is pinned
to the large flap and the two top  straps are pinned down onto the back panel. Zigzag the flap and back panel together.

Add base panel to back panel with bottom straps pinned as shown above. Zigzag together.

This is how your project should look at this stage.

Step 4: Attaching the remaining panels

Attach the remaining panels as shown above. I zigzagged the panels together on my sewing machine. To create the bag shape fold the bag in half and stitch the side pocket panel to the back panel Then sew the rest of the base in place. I did this part by hand because  I found it difficult to maneuver the fabric on my machine.

There's just a little finishing off to  do. Punch through the eyelets and thread through your cord. Thread the ends of the cord through the toggle. Sew on your  button for the large flap and that's that!

Ready Steady GO!!
