Learn how to create Freestanding Lace
Daleen digitizes using Wilcom 2006 ES65 – this is the simple method which can be done in most software.
Step 1. Go all around the design and create a tatami (as we call it in wilcom) or "step fill".

Step 2. Cut out the holes where you want them.

Step 3. Go to your fill settings and use a edge run, and a stitch density of 3.00 aswell as a stitch spacing of 3.00 place your entry and exit points on top of each other.

Step 4. Copy and paste this and set the angle to 90 degree, copy and paste twice more, you should have 4 layers of top of each other at the 0degree, 45 degree, 135 and 90 degree angles, this is your freestanding lace fabric that you have created.

Step 5. Now continue to add your satin fills , planning as you go not to create jump stitches,on top and you should have a swan that stays in one piece after rinsing ;0)) For stronger lace a double zigzag underlay can be used under the satin pieces.
