This project consists of 16 designs. Each design square is made so that it is only part of the complete picture and will match up with all the other designs when finished to make a complete picture. The finished appliscape is 16” x 16” in size and makes a great centrepiece for a quilt, wall panel, cushion cover or other project of your choice.
Fabrics you will need for the Applique Square Featured in this Article.
There will be guidelines for further fabrics with the design set you purchase.
·Gold Satin fabric for Border
·White fabric with Flecks and white sparkles for Snow 1
·White fabric with Flecks and Silver Dots for Snow 2
(if you cant find this, use some White Fabric with flecks and then add some shiny organza overtop. Use Wonder Under or spray adhesive to glue it onto the white cotton fabric with flecks for the snow.
·Blue brocade with Silver Flowers for ladies dress. (I found some 4” wide brocade ribbon for this)
·White Felt with Silver Sparkles for Ladies Fur Trim on Dress
Sewing out one of the Appliscape Squares
Following is a step by step guideline on how to sew out one of the appliscape squares. You need to sew out all 16 of these to complete the appliscape.
First Hoop 1 layer of white cotton with 1 layer of medium weight tearaway stabilizer underneath.
Color 1 - Appliqué Fabric (white andgray for snow 1)
Embroider the first color as per the design instructions. The instructions say Applique Fabric, so this is the outline for you to place fabric over.
Carefully cut fabric slightly larger then the Applique Fabric Outline. The fabric needed is the white andgray as per the details in your steps.
.
Before you place the fabric on the design in the hoop, you need to apply some adhesive to it. Either use spray adhesive and spray on the back of the fabric, or iron on Wonder Under adhesive. Above is one layer of the Wonder Under after the paper has been removed to show you what its like. Basically it’s just a very thin layer of glue.
Carefully iron the Applique Fabric in place using a mini appliqué iron.
Color 2- Appliqué Position (trim fabric)
Sew Appliqué Position outline with your machine. Remove hoop from machine and carefully trim around the outline using some very fine, pointed appliqué scissors. Trim as close as you can to the outline stitching without cutting the stitches.
This is the design in your hoop after the excess fabric has been trimmed away.
Color3 - Appliqué Fabric (white and grey fabric with silver dots for snow 2)
Place hoop back in machine and sew next color. It is the Applique Fabric Guideline again.
Cut fabric slightly larger then Applique Fabric Outline and place over outline. Make sure you have already applied your adhesive and iron in place.
Color 4 -Appliqué Position (trim fabric)
Sew Applique Position Outline to hold fabric in place.
Trim excess fabric away.
Color5 -Appliqué Fabric (blue brocade with silver flowers for ladies dress)
Sew Applique Fabric Outline.
Cut fabric slightly larger then outline, add adhesive and iron in place.
Color6 -Appliqué Position (trim fabric)
Sew Applique Position outline.
Carefully trim excess fabric away.
Color7 -Appliqué Fabric (white felt with sparkles for fur trim on dress)
Sew the next Applique Fabric outline, place fabric in place over outline and sew Applique Position outline.
Remove from hoop and carefully trim excess fabric away.
Color9 - White
Color10 -Medium Blue (to match brocade)
Color11 -White (or pearl/silver holographic)
Choose threads to match the color descriptions and sew all 3 colors on your machine.
You can tell these are not appliqué fabric colors because they have no mention of fabric.
Color12 -Appliqué Fabric (gold satin for border)
Sew the Applique Fabric Guideline and carefully place Gold Satin overtop.
Color13 -Appliqué Position (trim fabric)
Sew Applique Position Outline, and carefully trim fabric away.
Color14 -Gold Rayon
Color15 -Silver Metallic
Color16 -Gold Metallic with Black Flecks (or just gold Metallic)
Choose your embroidery threads to match the above colors and sew on your machine.
Color17 –Warm Gray
The final color to sew is the light satin stitch outline around the edge of the design. This is sewn in the embroidery hoop as part of your design.
Finishing off the Appliscape.
Remove design from hoop, and carefully trim around the edge of the satin stitch outline, carefully trimming away the excess stabilizer and white cotton fabric you hooped.
You now have one completed appliscape square.
Sew all 16 designs in the same way as described above and trim carefully around the final satin stitch outline. Detailed directions will be included with the designs for the colors used for each appliscape square. There is only one appliscape square featured here to show you how to make it.
When you have sewn out all the 16 squares, match them together like a jig-saw puzzle. Just lay them out on your bench to get the order right.
Sewing the Appliscape Squares Together.
You are now going to join the squares together on your machine. You can use an edge joining foot, or freehand zigzag stitch on your embroidery machine. Make the zigzag stitch 6mm wide. First just use the standard zigzag stitch to join the pieces together. I prefer to join them in rows.. So first sew the vertical rows for designs 1 to 4, then 4 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 16..
Now sew the horizontal lines between the above rows together.
The next step is to complete your appliscape. You can either sew another line of satin stitch over top of the above zigzag stitching. Sew the lines in the way you do a tick tac toe game. Set your machine zigzag at 6mm wide and 5mm depth and sew over top of the rows carefully covering all the stitching. This leaves you with a very tidy finish for each of the lines.
Alternatively find some braid that is approximately 6mm wide and either sew or hot glue gun this ontop of the zigzag stitches in the same way you would draw a tic tac toe game. First do the vertical lines, and then the horizontal rows.
You will now have a beautiful completed appliscape. This one has been finished off with satin stich lines and pearl braid to the outer edge of the appliscape. You can use the finished appliscape to make into cushion covers, wall panels or the center pieces of quilts.
