Embroidering the Frames

Choose your frame designs and the correct hoop size accordingly and follow the directions below.

Helpful Hint:  Fabric Paper softens when heated, so iron your fabric paper before hooping to make it easier to hoop.  Also, loosen the top thread tension on your machine if you notice bobbin thread showing around your design.

1.      Hoop one sheet of fabric paper.  Put the hoop in the machine, and if desired, slide a piece of tear-a-way stabilizer underneath the hoop.  The stabilizer helps to keep the satin stitch edges of the frames from distorting during stitching and provides additional support for the detail stitches.  The frame designs that were used to make these samples were applique frames, but you can use any frame designs.

2.    If you are using an applique frame design, begin by stitching the first outline stitching for the frame inside and outside edges.  Then stitch the center oval or circle satin stitch portion of the frame.  You may have to advance ahead in the design to this stitch sequence to do so.

3.    Next, stitch the detail portion of the design that is inside the frame itself.

4.    Remove the hoop from the machine and turn it over.  Do not remove the fabric paper from the hoop.  Carefully tear away the stabilizer.

5.    Cut a piece of matching fabric paper big enough to cover the back of the hoop or if you have used an applique design, to cover the outside outline stitching of the frame.  Spray the wrong side of this fabric paper piece lightly with temporary spray adhesive and place it over the back of the hoop so that the wrong side of both fabric papers are facing each other.

6.    Turn the hoop back over and place back in the machine.  Stitch the outside oval or circle satin stitch portion of the frame.

7.    Remove the hoop from machine and remove the fabric paper from the hoop.

Constructing the Frames

1.      Carefully cut away the excess fabric paper from around the frame.  Cut close to the satin stitching, but do not cut the stitches. If you do, mend them with a drop of Fraycheck.

2.    Remove the fabric paper in the frame center.  Cut away only the top layer.  Use a seam ripper first to carefully open a place big enough to slip your scissors in without going through the back layer.  Save the inside oval or circle that you have cut out.

3.    Hand sew a dangling beaded tassel at the center of the bottom of the frame.  To begin, slip your needle, threaded with doubled, sturdy sewing thread, knotted at the end, in between the frame front and back in the center of the bottom of the frame.  Bring the needle straight down between the satin stitching and take several small stitches over the satin stitches to secure before applying the beads.  After looping your thread through the last bead (use a tiny bead for this last bead) push your needle back up through all the beads and secure the thread with several stitches again in the center bottom of the frame.

4.    Make a long hanging loop of metallic cording and knot it at the raw ends.  Trim the ends close to the knot.  Place a drop of hotglue at the center top of the back of the frame,     right inside the outside satin edge stitching.  Secure the knot in the glue.

5.    Cut a small wedge of metallic ribbon, big enough to cover the knot and hotglue it in place over the knot.

6.    Tie a bow tightly on the hanging loop at the top of the frame.

Framing Your Pictures

1.      Make reprints of some favorite photos. Using the removed circles or ovals of fabric paper you have saved for a pattern cut out the photos.  You will need to cut the photos approximately ¼” larger than the removed fabric paper pieces so that the edges will fit under the frame opening.

2.    Slip the photos into the frames, centering and holding in place with a bit of tape or glue at the edges.  Be sure the tape does not extend past the opening of the frame.

3.    These frames would be great used for scrapbooking projects and are a great way to show off your loved ones photos.
