Hate #8: Take Control Of Your Taskbar

Symptom:  My Taskbar is inconsistent in displaying open windows.

Solution:  Take control of the way your Taskbar displays open windows and programs

Taskbar grouping kicks in when you have so many open documents from a single application that the buttons begin to get too small. The exact number varies depending on your screen resolution, theme settings, how many other windows are open, and other obscure factors. With a minor tweak, you can exert some control over how Taskbar grouping behaves.

Using the Tweak UI PowerToy from Microsoft (see HERE), navigate to Taskbar Grouping. There you'll find three options:

Group the least-used applications first:

By default, when the Taskbar fills up, Windows first groups the buttons for the application you haven't used for the longest time. If the Taskbar is still too full, Windows groups buttons for applications that you have used more recently.

Group the applications with the most windows first:

When the Taskbar fills up, Windows groups the buttons for the application with the most open windows.

Group any application with at least x windows:

Windows groups buttons for any application that has at least x open windows-even if the Taskbar isn't full. (You specify the value for x.)
