Hate #5: The Windows XP Splash Screen

The Windows Splash Screen is the screen displaying the Windows XP logo and an animated bar that lets you know there is actually something happening under the bonnet at the first part of the XP bootup routine. Eventually this screen disappears and is replaced by the Windows Welcome screen.
There are a few different ways to change that opening screen and some of them are a bit tricky for newbies. Some of them can be destructive to the whole boot process if you are not careful.
However, if you use the following program, you should be okay. It is made by Stardock and is called "Bootskin". Stardock assures the faint of heart that using this method is 100% safe for your computer. I have tried it on my own computer and it works without any problem.
Firstly, download Bootskin from here.
Run the program by double clicking on it and you will get a small wizard taking you through a couple of options. The main (and only) screen is shown below...
Included with the program are a few basic boot screens. Simply use the scroll bar down the right hand side, choose one by clicking on it and click the Apply button. Bootskin does the hard work for you. Reboot and admire your new replacement logo. If you want more of a selection, go here. When you download a new boot skin, take note of where you downloaded it to and use the File menu to "Import from file..."
