Hate #4: I Can't Make XP Log On Automatically

Symptom:
  I can't do this and I can't do that!

Solution:  Download "Tweak UI (User Interface)" from the Microsoft Web site here and make Windows XP do a whole pile of useful and time saving things.

After downloading and installing Tweak UI, you can run it from Start | All Programs | Powertoys For Windows XP | Tweak UI.

It presents the user with a series of tabs and controls to really do the impossible with Windows XP:

If you are the sole user of your computer and other family members have their own computers, then it is desirable to have the computer log on with the default user (you) without having to type in a password or click on anything with the mouse.  With Tweak UI it is simply a matter of opening the "Logon" tab as shown above and choosing the "Autologon" option.  The window pane to the right then allows you to tick the autologon option.  If you have a password it remembers this as well.

While you're there, correct another pet hate of mine (and maybe yours) as well.  I particularly dislike the autorun feature regarding CDs and DVDs.  That window with all the options that keeps popping up when you put a CD in that doesn't have an autorun feature of its own.  To stop this for good, open the "My Computer" tab in Tweak UI, drill down further into "AutoPlay" and choose the "Types" option.  Then simply untick both options in the right hand pane.  Now you can put a CD that you have burnt with mixed media on it - photos, mp3s, Word files - and access it straight away through Explorer without further interuption.
