Some Hints to Help with Downloading 3D Embroidery Version 7.2
by Carolyn Duncan
The 7.2 upgrade for the 3D software is about 100Mb in two files of almost 50Mb for the documentation and about the same for the upgrade itself. The last upgrade proved difficult for many of my customers so I was anticipating even more hassles with this one. I have heard on the net that some people have been able to get the full download in less than half and hour! I knew that there was no way that I would be able to achieve this as I only have a dial up connection and I live in a rural area on a small property, a long way from our local telephone exchange.
I did consider waiting until the CD was available but I am too impatient, so that option was only a fleeting thought. I decided to give it a go using the multiple file download.
I have had a lot of trouble with my Internet connection in the past so I made sure that the home phone was diverted to the mobile and that it and the desktop computer were unplugged. The extension in the studio was unplugged as well. I have my 3D software on my laptop so I connected it to the Internet and then went into VIP Configure and selected the Smart Update option. With all other phone connections unplugged I could get a speed of 40kb/sec on my laptop a giant leap from the usual 23kb/sec
NOTE: You must connect to the Internet BEFORE you select the Smart Update
The Smart Update link takes you directly to the 3D Upgrade web pages and you will be asked to wait while your computer is accessed to determine what upgrades you need.
I then went to the next page where the multiple downloads were available.
I book-marked the page immediately so that when I was disconnected I could just use the Internet connection to go directly to it. Of course I was, several times, and it did save me some time. When I was disconnected I could just click on the bookmark and start downloading again. I do not have a Download Accelerator on the laptop as it is seldom connected to the Internet. I will certainly have one installed for the next upgrade. There is a link to download one on the Smart Update website but I was too impatient to bother. I should have, as some of the downloads were nearly complete when I was disconnected and I had to restart from the beginning of that section. If you have the accelerator it will remember where you were and just continue from that point when you reconnect. It should do this without affecting the file in any way.
I found that each section took about 20-30 minutes to download if there were no problems. I managed to fully download the upgrade in one 4-5 hour evening session and the documentation the next.
If you are running XP the download is automatically saved into the following location unless you tell it otherwise.
C/Documents And Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/3D Embroidery System
In this position on your computer you can access the files from your Start Menu/all Programs/3D Embroidery system. But I could not install them from here. Even when I went through to the zip file itself It remained unresponsive matter how many times I clicked on it.
What you need to do is to open up WinZip V9 and open the first zip file from inside the WinZip software
-
Open WinZip (It must be V9 or it will not work)
-
Select the Open icon
-
Follow the path C/Documents And Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs/3D Embroidery System
-
Click on the zip file for either the documentation or the upgrade
-
Double click on the 3D Embroidery patch.exe file
