Umbrella Tutorial

This tutorial teaches you how to make little free standing lace umbrellas. It was designed to work with the Free Standing Lace Fantasy Umbrella designs. Annemarie hopes you have as much fun constructing your own little umbrellas as she had.

Learn how to make your Fantasy Umbrella in 14 easy steps.

Step 1. Stitch out the panels and sew them together with a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine or sew together by hand. You are welcome to use a glue gun if prefered.

Step 2.  Dip design in hot water, then place your design on a solid round object while still wet. (Annemarie used a small ball).  Leave it to dry.

Step 3. For the larger umbrella Annemarie used a plastic soccer ball.

Step 4. Now place the wet design on the ball to keep that perfect round form.

Step 5. Place the design outside to dry quicker.

Step 6. Embroider 2x stars for the center outside and center inside. This will ensure that tidy and exceptional finish. The glue gun works wonderfully.

.

Step 7. Now use a piece of round wood (about 10mm / 1/4' thick),  a bread knife and a plastic clothes hanger. If you want to only use the stick without the curved handle, please do so.

Step 8. Remove the "handle" off the clothes hanger by carefully cutting the hanger on my bread board..

Step 9. Now wrap the little stick with some lace (you can use any material strips or even a ribbon) and tie a bow on the end.

Step 10. If you decide to use the little plastic curve, just glue it to the little stick. The ribbon will hide the joint.

Step 11. Annemarie went to the local crafts shop and found this little handle, already made. It fitted perfectly over the end of the stick.

Step 12. Just don't wrap your ribbon right till the end if you decide to use this ready-made handle.

Step 13.  Just look at the lovely professional touch with the ready-made handle.   TIP : Spray paint the handle with the color of choice if you do not like the lace finish.

Step 14: Finally, glue the stick firmly to the umbrella. The wood attaches easily to the thread and holds real well.

... and you have made a beautiful free standing lace fantasy umbrella.
