"Mopani, I am so glad I found you" Slavani said. Mopani laughed about what he and Eagle did to teach Slavani a lesson. They walked home and found Mother busy washing the food she had got from the field. Slavani felt very bad about what happened, and he decided to do the right thing. "Mm… Mother..." Slavani took a deep breath. "Yes, what is wrong?" Mother asked. Slavani started to cry. "Mother, I have to tell you something." "I know - Eagle told me." Mother said. Slavani looked at his mother's eyes and saw that they had turned green. "Mother!” he started. Mother put her finger on his lips. "Shush, Slavani, I love you and your brother so much that I asked Eagle to keep an eye on the two of you. I am glad you learned a good lesson today. Now please do light the fire for me and then I'll tell you a secret!” In those days there were no matches or lighters. Slavani's father had taught him to light a fire with very fine dried grass and two sticks. He placed the grass down and started to rub the two stick together very fast. This caused more and more heat between the two sticks and as soon as he saw a little smoke, he blew on the sticks until he saw a small flame.
He carefully put the sticks on the grass and kept on blowing till the flame grew and the grass started to burn. Then he put more wood on the fire and felt very proud of himself when the fire took hold. Slavani's friend Bombo the tiger came to him. Let's go and play," he said, pulling Slavani by the arm. "Wait, Bombo. Mother wanted to tell me a secret!" said Slavani. "Yes Slavani. I do have a nice surprise for you," said Mother. "I invited your two friends Theka and Thembe to visit you today." "Oh Mother, thank you! Thank you!" Slavani gave her a hug, and ran outside to play with Bombo. They called Dumbe the bird. "Dumbe, please fly as high as you can and come and tell us when you can see Thembe and Theka coming." "Kweek! Kweek! Kweek! I'll do that... I like them... Kweek! Kweek! Kweek!" Dumbe said, and off he flew. Slavani was so happy that he ran and jumped on Mongame the sheep's back and they played until both of them were short of breath. "Here they come! Kweek! Kweek! ? Here they come!" Dumbe screamed. Slavani was very happy to see his friends. He showed them his handmade tools. Where is your bow, Slavani?" Thembe asked. "I have made one and I will show it to you later. Let us play first, before mother calls us to eat." Slavani said. Hand in hand the three friends ran to some nearby trees.
Let's play hide and seek," Thembe said. So Theka and Slavani hid behind an old dried tree trunk while Thembe counted to ten with her eyes closed. Every now and then they would peep around the tree trunk to see if Thembe was coming. They played all day long and enjoyed the food mother made for them. Then it was time for his friends to go home. "Slavani, we haven't seen your bow yet," they said. Feeling very proud Slavani ran away and came back with his bow. "I made this bow and arrow for you Theka, and the stone tool I made for you, Thembe." "Oh Slavani, you worked so hard on it we cannot accept these." "Please I really want you to have them - it makes me feel good to see you enjoying them, and I enjoyed the time you spent with me," said Slavani. "Thank you very much!" they said, and waved Slavani goodbye. Slavani climbed his favorite tree and heard a voice. "Slavani, you made me so proud today by being so giving to your friends. You'll be a very blessed boy because there is no bigger blessing than to be giving." Slavani smiled and looked around. He heard a rumble.....Now who was talking to Slavani??? Can you guess? In the next story, you will find out who was talking to Slavani!
